BrainPort Training
Training for People with Balance Difficulties
BrainPort balance device training is available at a number of rehabilitation clinics in Canada. BrainPort training typically includes 4-6 hours of individualized training with a therapist over 2-3 consequtive days in the clinic. Following the clinic training, patients are able to continue training with the BrainPort balance device independently at home. The recommended home use is typically 2-20 minute training sessions each day.
During the clinic training, patients are trained to comfortably position the BrainPort balance device, placing the intra-oral device on the anterior portion of the tongue. They learn to adjust the intensity of the stimulus to a comfortable level and use the signals on the tongue to maintain their balance. Patients are instructed in their home training program and the recommended home use. Most patients will experience improvements in balance, posture and gait within a week with consistent use of the BrainPort balance device.
